This year to become a referee you must be at least 12 years old prior to the new year (2012 birth year). There is a two-step process first year officials must complete to be certified:
- Register for an online course called Hockey University which teaches young officials’ basic skills such as gameday responsibilities, positioning, and signals.
- Register for an in-person clinic. This gives officials an opportunity to expand what they have learned in Hockey University and be able to ask questions to the instructors. There is an hour of on-ice instruction after the class portion, and a test will be emailed to all participants at day's end.
Both can be registered for at https://register.hockeycanada.ca under the tab “register for clinics.”
A reminder to those returning that every year you must recertify. You do not require Hockey University again for certification, but you need to attend a clinic! If you need clarification on which level to pursue, please reach out to me.
Macdonald will not be hosting a clinic this season, but there are many clinic options available in Winnipeg to sign up for. Items to bring include, a pen, helmet, skates, and a whistle.
After clinic registration if you could kindly let me know at refs@macdonaldhockey.ca. That way I can create a TeamLinkt login which adds you/ your child to the roster and allows me to assign games.
As always, if you have any questions or need further clarification don’t hesitate to reach out to ...
